Greek Woman: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Pi, Greek African American

>* How have you contributed to your particular organization’s promotion and advancement?
Since we have become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., we have made it a priority to advance this organization beyond its usual means. As the current Vice President of the chapter, we are working hard so that we are promoted in the right light. This is done through positive activities such as making sure we participate in collegiate activities, helping out around the community in activities such as our ongoing project entitled Community Garden and participating in Relay for Life. Not only are we serving our community to its highest capacity, a positive reflection of our sorority also comes out of this. We continually push the members of this illustrious organization to get out on campus and in the local Louisiana community and serve so that we can promote our organization and advance.

What can fraternities and sororities do in the future to improve their image at the Tech University?
Our organization’s image starts with our personal behavior and image. Each individual must uphold the image in a light in which they wish their organization to be looked at. So events, forums, activities about being a better, more professional team member in your organization is one way to improve an organization’s image. Other ways are simply participating in events. If an organization lacks to assist in on-campus events, then their appearance to Tech faculty and students might seem as if they are not doing anything at all. Also, more community participation. For all organizations, but mainly the Divine Nine, parties should not be our highlighted event for a quarter.

>>>***
To us, being Greek means being a part of an organization that one not only whole-heartedly loves, but is willing to do anything for. Being Greek says, "We became a part of this organization and it’s a part of us." We will work our hardest to keep this organization. The same dedication and drive we had when fighting for membership, we will have while we work upon membership. But being Greek is also about fighting stereotypes. We are NOT a member of a “partying” organization. We do more than socialize. We are a part of an African American organization that is about being of service, TO ALL MANKIND.

Upon graduation, let it to be said that we worked hard for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. We want to graduate knowing that the Divine Nine organizations, especially Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, will only get better.

Greek Life at UCLA

Fraternities and Sororities have been an important part of the University of California, Los Angeles experience when the first charter was signed in 1920. The Greek Bruins at the University of Central Los Angeles (UCLA) in Los Angeles, California make an effort to demonstrate that they're not really the sex-addicted, keg-chugging pigs stereotyped in the media-- but rather well-raised and polite. To some magnitude, this is true because when talking to a Greek at UCLA, you realize there is a UCLA-worthy brain in there. In the present day, UCLA is home to over 70 National and local Greek-letter establishments, which collectively constitute the biggest membership-based community on grounds. There's little hierarchy inside the Bruin Greek system, although the fraternities and sororities often behave as a giant family that other students and outsiders are simply cannot understand. For anyone who is an associate of Greek life, it indicates you're constantly bombarded with potential opportunities, while while the others miss out on chances. Comprising fifteen percent of the student populace, frat and sorority members are dedicated in their studies, giving back to the local community, and developing and reinforcing leadership capabilities. The Greeks at UCLA form networks and connections among the campus and surrounding area and have connections to affordable lodging which isn't available to other non-Greek students. Most agree that the procedure of joining one of UCLA's many nationally regarded houses can be overwhelming, but spending college years with your Greek brothers and sisters is amazing, the networking opportunities and local support undertakings make going Greek worth it to the hundreds of members. In terms of Greeks and their parties, Greek functions often are the major talking points of weekend adventures and are generally the only substitute to smallweek, such as celebrations, philanthropy events, dates, or social gatherings with similar houses. Furthermore, the varied greek organizations at UCLA characterize one of biggest and strongly founded scenes within the large and progressive West Coast area. However, the students who don't to participate in the large and noisy Greek celebrations and social gatherings can still find themselves with all of the Loz Angeles night-light to experience. Popular hotspots are only a car, truck, or bus ride away. Fraternities and Sororities have improved upon the college experience and developed life-long memories of literally hundreds and hundreds of women and men who have joined a frat or sorority since their start. A Nationwide study finds that a Fraternity/Sorority may account for motivating students to continue to study in college and therefore Greek membership in College contributes positively to the lives and community of its members after graduation. Greek-associated alumni are significantly more satisfied in their interpersonal enhancement during college in comparison to the non-Greeks (or GDI's) and overall tend to have a better college experience, if they are the sort of individual who enjoys social events and being outgoing and friendly.

Fraternity's: Serious Business

This happened at Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, Louisiana. What you see is the remains of one the most "fratty" of the frats in this backwoods area. Ruston is a small college town in North Louisiana and word about the Pike's house spread faster than the fire. The newspapers and initial investigation state that the fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, was having a fire when the blaze got out of control. The fire happened on the last day of the school year, so it was thought that the frat was simply burning their old text books and playing volleyball--very frat-star and Greek by any traditional college terms-- when the attic or something caught an ember. However, when sirens awoke everyone sleeping in a 3 mile radius at 4 in the morning, it was apparent the party had literally set the roof on fire. Official reports could easily be misguided because of the prestige and financial investments that the Pi Kappa's and their alumni have in this small college town. So upon further investigation, other details surface.
Word on the street is that Sigma Nu, the rivals of Pi Kappa and also their neighbors, did it in retaliation.
Speculators and inside sources say that Pi Kappa Alpha of Louisiana Tech had damaged the cars of the Sigma Nu's who live right next door. In retaliation, some think that the Sigma Nu's of Louisiana Tech decided to burn the house of their rivals to the ground.
Another student at Louisiana Tech, who was at the the last party at the Pi Kappa Alpha house, suspects a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory located in their basement as being responsible for the charred remains of the house of one of Louisiana Tech's most prestigious and financially well off fraternity. Rivalries between fraternities seem to vary from campus to campus, but one thing remains the same: there is a big difference between college hi-jinks and arson.
Upon further investigation, it was concluded that police arrived in time to escort everyone outside of the fraternity house, even one frat member who was sleeping.
There are many questions that arise, because the fire was described as an "explosion" by everyone in ear shot as well as fire fighters. So how was this one member sleeping through not only an end-of-the-year party but also a fiery explosion? The picture above was taken once the sun rose. Hours later the brick walls and remains were further torn down, leaving nothing but a flat land of charred remains and hidden secrets.

Big Man on Campus

Everyone knows Mister Cool. He has the social skills that made him popular in high school and now he's even more awesome that he's in college and his parents bought him everything his heart could desire. Chances are he's involved in a fraternity and everyone enjoys partying with this socialite.
The problem with Mister Cool and his swag lifestyle is that college is not all about parties or meeting tons of women, though it is certainly a part. College is mostly about furthering your education, which is something most freshman struggle with. This is why freshman year for many students, though not academically the most difficult, is still the most challenging year and why drop-out rates are so high.
Learn to balance your time unless you plan on college being one year long party. If that's your goal enjoy it while you can, because you're bound to lose scholarships, money, and parental support. Learn to be independent and make responsible choices. There will be certain days (or nights) where you simply cannot go out and party with your new found friends. These includes nights before exams, interviews, or in-class presentations. If freshman realized that by choosing their party nights and their study nights carefully, there will be greater career success as well as future parties down the road.
Getting a girlfriend freshman year can certainly complicate an already challenging situation for the incoming freshman. Of course, the cool crowd (not that much has changed since high school) will seem to balance money, girls, party, and school with ease; however, when their final grades come in, they are sure to realize how studying would have improved their grades.
There will always be another party, but there may not always be another chance to submit your report on time or to know everything you need for a final test. Professors my freshman year were much more lenient when it came to submitting reports and such on time than my senior level classes were. So keep in mind that if you barely made it by freshman year in regards to having late papers submitted you may have to change your study methods and style of work.
Academic integrity is something that the socialite may lack and he may try and cheat on tests or on papers. The only person this hurts is him, both in the long run and in the risk necessary in the short run. The best bet for all incoming freshman is to learn the importance or organization and respect for the teachers in the classroom.
